Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) November 2, 2015 – The Sunshine State ranks among the most hazardous states in the country for car accidents, as well as boat, bicycle and pedestrian accidents.

“Unfortunately, our state has a high rate of accidents leading to serious injury or even death,” said Jason Chalik, a car accident attorney with Chalik Law Offices. “When those injuries are the result of another’s negligence, the injured party has the right to seek compensation.”

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in 2013 there were 2,407 deaths in Florida from 2,228 fatal crashes. That is the third highest number of fatalities in the nation, which is to be expected since Florida is a populous state. However, Florida also saw a rate of 1.25 deaths per 100 million miles driven, which is above the U.S. average of 1.11, and gives Florida a ranking of 16th most dangerous state for car accidents.

The numbers are worse for other types of accidents. Florida leads the nation in boating accidents, with 634 reportable boating accidents in 2014, resulting in 73 fatalities. Those numbers may not be a surprise given Florida’s extensive coastline and numerous waterways, but the Sunshine State also leads the nation in the rate of bicycle fatalities. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Florida had 6.56 bicyclist fatalities per million people in 2011, the highest of any state.

For years, Florida was also ranked as the most dangerous state in the nation for pedestrians, until the state’s transportation director embarked on a concerted effort two years ago to improve pedestrian safety. Florida has made progress, installing crossing signals, bike lanes and foot bridges. According to data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the state is now ranked as fifth most dangerous for pedestrians.
