Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) February 16, 2016 – Traffic deaths in Florida increased in 2015, according to preliminary data.

Tentative numbers from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles indicate that there were 2,939 highway fatalities in Florida in 2015. That is a 17.8 percent increase from 2,494 traffic deaths in 2014.

“Far too many people lose their lives on Florida’s roads,” said Jason Chalik, a Florida car accident attorney with Chalik Law Offices. “Whenever someone is killed or injured in a car accident that results from another person’s negligence, the victim or victim’s family deserves compensation.”

The increase in highway deaths represents a failure for several government agencies, which came together in 2012 to set a goal of reducing traffic fatalities by 5 percent annually. The effort started with a baseline of 2,431 deaths, an average from 2006 to 2010. The state of Florida never met the goal of a 5 percent reduction. In 2013, there were about 100 more deaths than the safety plan projected, and in 2014 there were 300 more than the plan’s benchmark.

In 2015, the state’s safety plan projected 2,084 deaths on Florida roads. That benchmark was missed by more than 40 percent, with 855 more traffic fatalities than the plan’s projection. The increase in traffic deaths was not a year-end surprise. An analysis conducted last summer by the National Safety Council showed that highway fatalities were up 29 percent in Florida and 14 percent nationally in the first six months of 2015, compared to the same period in 2014.

Some Florida legislators plan to address highway safety by proposing a strengthening of Florida’s texting-while-driving law, and increasing penalties on drivers who injure pedestrians or bicyclists.
